When it comes to\u00a0Keke Palmer<\/strong>\u2018s past relationship with\u00a0Darius Jackson<\/strong>, she\u00a0calls it a \u201ctoxic dynamic.\u201d In a cover story on\u00a0The Cut<\/strong><\/a>, she\u00a0revealed she\u2019d initially made excuses for her ex when he\u2019d allegedly abused her during their two years together.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can say, \u2018I know you\u2019re not like that,\u2019 or \u2018I know it\u2019s not like this,\u2019 or \u2018I know you\u2019re a good person deep down.\u2019 You can make so many excuses for behavior that could have stopped,\u201d said Palmer, who notes she hated when word spread about her relationship and worried how it would affect her brand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my personal junk. It didn\u2019t deserve a place in the center of something that I worked very hard to make encouraging and empowering,\u201d Palmer said. \u201cWhen it was happening, it was horrible because I could not get to the message of the story, in real time. Now, I\u2019m able to articulate it, and I\u2019m able to say what the story will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keke credits the birth of son\u00a0Leodis<\/strong>\u00a0for giving her the courage to end the relationship\u00a0\u201cbefore it had the chance of becoming something that I had to survive.\u201d Keke is now co-parenting with Darius, after being granted a restraining order in 2024 that protects her against the domestic violence she\u2019d allegedly been facing.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the story, Keke talks about taking music into her own hands because labels didn\u2019t know how to market her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talented, I can sing, I can perform, I can do all that, but knowing how to present that to the world, there\u2019s still an art to that,\u201d she said. \u201cMy experience with labels taught me that I had to figure that out because they weren\u2019t able to really help me with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palmer\u2019s movie\u00a0One of Them Days\u00a0<\/em>with\u00a0SZA<\/strong>\u00a0arrives Friday.<\/p>\n
